Does Life Insurance Require a Medical Exam?
It depends on the policy type
Many traditional term and permanent policies use full underwriting, which can include a paramedical exam - typically height and weight, blood pressure, and blood or urine samples - along with a review of your health history.
Simplified issue and guaranteed issue options
Other policies, including many final expense products, use simplified underwriting, where you answer a set of health questions but skip the exam, or guaranteed issue, where there are no health questions or exam at all. These typically come with lower coverage amounts and different pricing than fully underwritten policies.
What affects your options
Your age, health history, and how much coverage you're looking for all play a role in which type of policy makes sense. If a medical exam is a dealbreaker, there are usually still ways to get covered - it may just mean a different type of policy or carrier. Comparing options across carriers is the best way to see what's actually available to you.
